BALTIMORE, MD -- The FIRST Robotics Competition's premier event in Maryland is moving to Baltimore for 2010. The Chesapeake Regional, featuring more than 1,000 high school students in 49 robotics teams from around the nation, will be held at the Baltimore Convention Center on March 11-13, 2010. The annual event has been held at the Naval Academy in Annapolis for the past seven years, and comes to Baltimore to a larger facility and a greater base of attendees, sponsors and volunteers.

Michael Eisenklam, principal at Eldersburg Elementary School, has been selected as the Carroll County Public School System’s nominee for the Maryland Outstanding Technology Leader in Education Award. This award is presented by the Maryland Society for Educational Technology to recognize an educator outside the classroom who has made exemplary contributions to the implementation of technology in Maryland’s schools.

January and February not only brought us snow, but a new semester as well:
Technology is always being adapted into schools, but now a whole new way of teaching has surfaced. It has come to Century and Liberty High School, using video conferencing software. This software links these two schools into a singular classroom. Liberty High gave up a part of their media center so it can be used as the conferencing room.

Piney Ridge Elementary School has been selected as a Maryland State School of Character. Eldersburg Elementary School received Honorable Mention. The Maryland State School of Character awards program is sponsored by the Maryland Center for Character Education and the Character Education Partnership. The program recognizes schools or districts that demonstrate outstanding school climate and academic performance.

The Carroll County Debate League will hold its championship tournament on Friday and Saturday, March 12 and 13, 2010, at Winters Mill High School. The tournament will be held from 3:30 to 7:30 p.m. on Friday and 8:30 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. on Saturday.

The Carroll County Public Schools Education Foundation is seeking donations to help provide every public school in Carroll County with an automated external defibrillator (AED). The school system is currently in compliance with state law, but the Education Foundation is working to exceed the legal requirement by providing AEDs in each school. Sufficient funds need to be raised so that the devices can be placed in all of our schools.

Due to inclement weather and lost teaching days from snow closures, the 3rd marking period for Carroll County schools will be extended and conclude on Thursday, April 8, 2010. The 4th marking period will begin on Friday, April 9, 2010. The April 1 early dismissal will remain as scheduled. There will not be an early dismissal on April 8.
|
