Maryland Marriage Alliance Collects Half of Needed Signatures to Put Marriage Referendum on November Ballot

Annapolis, MD – The Maryland Marriage Alliance (MMA) announced today that they have collected over 30,000 signatures of voters to qualify a referendum putting the definition of marriage on the November ballot.

"We have been extremely happy with the enthusiastic support of voters to stop the redefinition of marriage in its tracks," said Derek McCoy, Executive Director of the Maryland Marriage Alliance. "In the 31 states to consider the marriage issue, 31 times voters have rejected same-sex marriage and reaffirmed the definition of marriage as a union between one man and one woman. We are confident that Maryland voters will have this opportunity in November, and that they will act on it."

The success of the effort is largely due to the commitment of the Maryland Marriage Alliance to build a broad network of supporters. Since March, MMA's partners have hosted petition drives and training sessions at community centers, festivals, fairs and churches.

On May 5th, McCoy will join supporters at the National Church of God in Prince George's County for a petition drive. A list of past and future petition drives can be found on the MMA website: http://www.marylandmarriagealliance.com.

"We have seen petitions come in from all corners of the state," McCoy said. "We encourage all of our supporters to continue to circulate petitions and to return them to the Maryland Marriage Alliance on a weekly basis. It's our hope to finish early due to the overwhelming support of the petition drive."

The Maryland Marriage Alliance includes the Maryland Family Alliance, Maryland Catholic Conference, the National Organization for Marriage, and host of Maryland churches, organizations, and citizens.
